    SON OF COLONEL, HUONG WAS BORN IN THE MEKONG DELTA IN 1903. HE THROW UP A CAREER IN EDUCATION IN 1945 TO JOIN THE VIETMINH GUERRILLAS WHEN THEY BEGAN THEIR STRUGGLE AGAINST THE FRENCH FOR SELF-DETERMINATION.
