REPORTER: "Before the tournament started you said you didn't know whether you were ready to play or not. You hadn't played too much. Did your play--and 21 under per--surprise you?"



NICKLAUS: "Yeah, I have to say it surprised me a little Bit. Quite a bit, actually. I never really got in trouble, I made a few mistakes, mainly at the end of the first round and the start of the second. But I didn't lose many shots through it, and I got 'i'm down out of the bunkers that I was in, in the second round, and I putted good all week. I kept making putts and I had confidence in my putting, and every time stepped up to I felt I had a good shot, whether it be a six-footer or forty feet and I made quite a few putts and I don't ever recall a time when I made that many twenty-footers, and of course the (INDISTINCT) are so darn good here, and there's not much brake on, and if you get a putt inside twenty feet you seldom have to give away the hole on a putt. So you try to line them up, and of course there are times when you're away from the game, and you haven't been putting for a time, and you look down at it and you get a good fresh look at the putter and you really concentrate on it, and sometimes you really work out well. Of course at other times you really putt quite lousy, but I was fortunate this week."

Background: Jack Nicklaus, the United States golf international, notched up his seventh open championship victory of the year on Monday when he clinched the Disneyland Open Championship with a final eight-under-par 64.

He strolled off the course in the company of none other than Mickey Mouse, Walt Disney's most famous cartoon character and founder of the fortune which led to Disney creating the Florida fun-town where the championship was held.

The film includes an interview with Nicklaus, overlaid with shots of his final round. His 72-hole total of 267--21 below par--was his best this season. He also became the first player to win more than 300,000 dollars (about 125,000 pounds sterling) in one season.
