    THE DEMONSTRATORS, WHO ATTENDED MASSES AND VISITED CEMETERIES, HELD AN ALL NIGHT VIGIL IN GIBELLINA TO COMMEMORATE THE DISASTER WHICH CLAIMED 200 LIVES.

    AFTER THE DISASTER THE ITALIAN GOVERNMENT ALLOCATED 327,000 MILLION LIRE (ABUT 220 MILLION STERLING) FOR AID BUT LITTLE HAS BEEN SPENT SO FAR.

    THE EARTHQUAKE DESTROYED ABOUT 9,000 HOMES AND SEVERAL TOWNS WERE TOTALLY WRECKED. AT THE TIME OF THE DISASTER MANY CITIZENS OF THE STRICKEN TOWNS EMIGRATED TO NORTH ITALY OR OVERSEAS.
