  • Description

One of the highlights of the four-day state visit of President Marien N'gouabi of the People's Republic of the Congo to Senegal was on Tuesday (14 January) when he visited St. Louis, 160 miles (270 kilometres) north of the capital, Dakar, to witness the foundation stone ceremony at Gaston Berger University.

The new university was officially inaugurated by Senegalese President Leopold Senghor, in the presence of the French Minister for Co-operation with Developing Countries, M. Pierre Abelin. France has agreed to furnish 50 per cent of the cost of the establishment.

President N'gouabi's visit to Senegal -- which ended on Thursday (16 January) when he flew on to Ivory Coast -- provided the Congolese leader and his host with the opportunity for bilateral trade discussions. Informed sources said agreements on sea-fishing, merchant shipping, education and cultural exchanges were signed.
