The new U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Mr. John Scali, presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim on Tuesday (20 February) together with one million dollar (U.S.) (about GBP 410,000 sterling) cheque and memento form the moon.
The cheque was the latest U.S. contribution to the U.N. fund for drug abuse control.
Mr. Scali, 54, a former journalist, has served the Nixon administration for the past two years as a consultant on information policy and foreign affairs.
He succeeds Ambassador George Bush who last month left the U.N. to become Chairman of the Republican National Committee.
