SYNOPSIS: In Tanzania, President Julius Nyerere attended a massive May Day rally at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam. He told the huge crowd that Tanzania had embarked on a 20-year industrialisation programme which would concentrate on the creation of a machine tool industry. The necessity for such an industry to accelerate the nation's moves towards self-sufficiency had been accepted by the government. The country could not build its economy on foreign know-how, he said.

A colourful parade of decorated floats has preceded the President's address and afterwards there was dancing and, here, singing from the girls of the National Service troupe. Later President Nyerere made a presentation of certificates to five people who represented the 200 best workers chosen by the Union of Tanzania workers.

In the Senegalese capital, Dakar, several thousand people participated in a parade to mark May Day. This too was a festive occasion, but also with a theme of industrial growth and political Change. In February, Senegal held its first elections since President Leopold Senghor denounced the one party system. the ruling Socialist party was returned to power.

The parade was reviewed by several ministers, including the Justice Minister Alioune Mbengue, the Forces Minister Amadou Sall and the Minister of Labour and Employment Alioune Diagne. Also present was the General Secretary of the National Confederation of Senegalese workers, Babacar Diagne, who later led trade union representatives to the Palace of the Republic.

At the palace, they were received by President Senghor and the Prime Minister, Abdou Diouf.
