  • Description

The University of Science and Technology in Kumasi recently invited some 250 farmers to take part in an agricultural workshop. The Ghanaian Police Commissioner and Minister responsible for Agriculture, Mr. J.E. Nunoo, declared the workshop open.

It was the fifth agricultural workshop to be organised by the University's Faculty of Agriculture, and its theme was "agricultural co-operatives".

In his address Mr. Nunoo advised the farmers to group themselves into co-operative societies to make them eligible for loans from the Agricultural Credit Bank.

He promised full help from the government. The Ministry of Agriculture, he said, had been re-organised to help provide enough food for the people and at the same time produce sufficient raw materials for local industries and export.

The farmers were taken round the laboratories of the Faculty of Agriculture. They looked in on the Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry Laboratory, and saw recent experiments in plant pathology and entomology.

The University has its own farm, with more than 200 acres. In one experiment the Animal Husbandry Division is cross-breeding the local black pig with a white variety from Britain.
