Background: An experimental rocket-propelled "??? landing vehicle" has been designed and developed at the United States Naval Ordinance Test Station at China Lake, California. It was tested May 15; and it was the first time any rocket-powered vehicle has taken off and landed vertically under its own power.
The prototype resembles a small water tank. It has for legs, set 90 degrees apart. Fuel tanks in the supporting channels slope up to the high-pressure nitrogen bottle at the top. And it rests on four automobile shock absorbers. The vehicle is eight feet tall, five feet in diameter, and weighs 700 lbs fully loaded.
The SLV (short for "soft landing vehicle") lifts off the testing pad, climbs to the desired altitude, and returns gently to the pad. it can hover in mid-air at any point. The soft landing does not damage its scientific instruments, a US Navy spokesman said.
During tests, the SLV is restricted to vertical movement on four cables hung between the ground and an overhead tower 150 feet high.
