Background: Athletes from the United States dominated the field in an international athletics meeting held in Rome on Saturday (14 August).
SYNOPSIS: But in the men's 110 metre hurdles, Guy Drut of France, the gold medallist in the event at the Montreal Olympics, sped to victory. He clocked a time of 13.51 seconds to beat Charles Foster of the United States and Olympic bronze medallist, American Willie Davenport.
In the women's 100 metres race, Irena Szewinska of Poland took first place in 11.44 seconds. She beat Rita Bottiglieri of Italy and Ester Rot of Israel.
One of the highlights of the meet was the men's 100 metres. Steve Riddick of the United States took first place in 10.27 seconds. Petro Mennea of Italy was second and Houston McTear of the United States third.
The pole vault also provided some excitement. Wladislav Kozakievic of Poland didn't succeed in this jump -- and he broke the pole in his efforts.
Voicich Buciarski, also of Poland, was more successful. He came fifth at the Montreal Olympics.
