Background: In the presence of Queen Elizabeth and Princess Anne at Edinburgh's Meadowbank Stadium, two young Scotsmen, 21-year-old Ian Stewart and 25-year-old Ian McCafferty, today (Saturday) placed first and second in the final of the 5,000-metre race at the Commonwealth Games, defeating Kenya's Kipchoge Keino into third place. Stewart's time of 13 minutes 22.8 seconds broke the European, Commonwealth and British records for the event - but did not reach the 13.16.6 world record held by Australian Ron Clark, who finished fifth today.

Kip Keino - running under a heavy security guard placed on the rooftop and throughout the stadium following reported threats on his life - was running in second place well into the final lap. But, as he, Stewart and McCafferty bunched together round the last bend (with Clark trailing a poor fifth in his last track appearance before retiring), McCafferty pushed past Keino who seemed unable to produce his classic final burst.

Princess Anne presented the Gold Medal to Stewart - Scotland's second Gold in the Games - giving the home crowd a grand finale to the Ninth Commonwealth Games.
