  • Description

The French cruise liner Antilles caught fire Friday (Jan. 8th) after running aground on a reef near the small island of Mustique, about 450 miles south of Puerto Rico. Oil leaked from the ship into the boiler room and was ignited.

The Queen Elizabeth lowered lifeboats, sent them to Mustique and picked up 501 passengers and crewmen from the Antilles who had gone ashore in lifeboats from their own ship. The British liner landed them at Bridgetown, Barbados, after a rescue operation which took five hours to complete. No one was injured.

The Antilles is regarded as a total loss. Crew members had attempted to put out the five which started in the boiler room, but could not contain it. After an hour or so, the passengers, wearing lifebelts, climbed into the lifeboats, which were lowered and either towed or rowed to the nearby island of Mustique.
