  • Description

Zambia reached the semi-finals of the African Soccer Championship when they beat Uganda by own goal in Mehalla, Egypt, on Wednesday (6 March).

Egypt hed already qualified for the semi-finals. They won the 'Group A' table by winning all three of their matches against Zambia. Uganda and the Ivory Coast. The Zambia Uganda match decided who took the other sami-final place.

Uganda - who atarted the game by passing back to their goalkeeper from the kick-off -seemed to lack confidence in their ability to beat Zambia, but it was a mistake by Ugandan goalkeeper Natan that decided the game. He misjudged Mkwaza's inswinging corner kick after 20 minutes and the ball was deflected into the net by Ugandan captain Kerunda standing on the goal-line. It was the only goal of the match.

Kerunda almost made up for his misfortune in the second half when his shot beat Zambian goalkeeper Mwape after a Ugandan corner kick, but it was headed off the line. Zambia deserved their narrow win in front of a meagre 5,000 crowd at Mehalla. They play 'Group B' winners, the Congo, in the semi-final in Alexandria on Saturday (9 March).

Egypt won their final 'Group A' match against the Ivory Coast in front of a crowd of 70,000 in Cairo, where they will also play Zaire in their semi-final on Saturday. Zaire, Africa's representative in the World Cup, came second in the 'Group B' table.
