  • Description

CENTRAL AFRICA - AND A PRIME MINISTER INSPECTS HIS TROOPS. WHILE PRESIDENT NYERERE OF NEIGHBOURING TANGANYIKA WAS SENDING MESSAGES OF APPRECIATION TO BRITAIN FOR HER HELP WHEN HIS TROOPS MUTINIED, THE NEW PRIME MINISTER OF NORTHERN RHODESIA, DR. KENNETH KAUNDA, WAS INSPECTING SOME OF HIS TROOPS OF THE NORTHERN RHODESIAN REGIMENT.

HE TOLD THE AFRICAN SOLDIERS THAT DIFFICULTIES THEY HAD OVER PAY AND CONDITIONS OF SERVICE WERE BEING CONSIDERED.

THE INSPECTION FOLLOWED A RALLY IN LUSAKA ORGANISED BY DR. KAUNDA'S UNITED NATIONAL INDEPENDENCE PARTY.

IT WAS INTENDED TO HOLD A PARADE BEFORE THE RALLY, BUT BECAUSE THE OPPOSITION AFRICAN NATIONAL CONGRESS WERE ALSO HOLDING A MEETING IN THE SAME AREA IT WAS DECIDED TO HOLD ONLY THE UNIP RALLY TO AVOID ANY POSSIBLE TROUBLE.

AT THE RALLY THE PRIME MINISTER TOLD THE LARGE CROWD HE HAD HOPES THE COUNTRY WOULD BECOME INDEPENDENT ON OCTOBER 24 AND WOULD THEN BE KNOWN AS ZAMBIA.

NORTHERN RHODESIA - ONE OF AFRICA'S RICHEST COUNTRIES BECAUSE OF ITS COPPER DEPOSITS - MOVED INTO INTERNAL SELF-GO SELF-GOVERNMENT FOLLOWING ELECTIONS JUST OVER A WEEK AGO.
