    FORTY THOUSAND MINERS MARCHED THROUGH LENS YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) WITH BANNERS AND PLACARDS IN A MASS DEMONSTRATION CALLED BY THE UNIONS IN THE 'BASSIN DU NORD' COAL MINING DISTRICT.DEPUTIES AND MAYORS MARCHED IN THE PROCESSION ALONGSIDE THE MINERS AS HUGE CROWDS LOOKED ON.

    THE COUNTRY'S 240,000 MINERS HAVE BEEN ON STRIKE SINCE MARCH 1.YESTERDAY, AFTER A MEETING WITH THE COAL BOARD, UNION LEADERS SAID THEY HAD REJECTED AN OFFER OF A PAY-RISE OF 'LESS THAN 5 PER CENT'.THE MINERS ARE PRESSING FOR AN II PER CENT INCREASE, SHORTER WORKING HOURS, AND IMPROVED PENSIONS.

    ON MONDAY, THEIR LEADERS ARE DUE TO MEET THE GOVERNMENT COMMITTEE OF "THREE WISE MEN" APPOINTED TO STUDY THE DISPARITY IN WAGES BETWEEN THE PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SECTORS OF INDUSTRY.IT IS THIS WAGE-LAG WHICH SPARKED OFF THE CURRENT WAVE OF STRIKES IN NATIONALISED ENTERPRISES.THE COAL INDUSTRY'S STRIKE HAS HAD ITS MAIN IMPACT ON INDUSTRY WHERE MANY WORKS ARE FACING THE RISK OF CLOSING.
