  • Description

A huge crowd turned out in the main auditorium in Port Sudan to celebrate the fourth Anniversary of Sudanese independence.

The President of the Sudan, Major-General Jaafar el-Nemery, and the Vice-President, Mr. Abel Alair, both attended the anniversary celebrations.

Although the Sudan became independent in 1956, a bitter civil war raged in the country for more than fifteen years. The war was between the central Sudanese government in the capital of Khartoum and the supporters of autonomous rule in the south.

The people of the southern provinces of the Sudan -- who total about five million out of a total population of more than 12 1/2 million -- are totally different from those in the north. The people of the south are of African origin and follow either the Christian or pagan religions. Those who live in the north of the country are mostly of Arab descent and follow the Moslem religion.

After independence southern determination not to be dominated by the Arab north escalated into full scale civil war.

However, a month after taking office, President Nemery announced
that he would set up a regional sutonomy for the southern part of the country and a special Ministry of Southern Affairs was established.

Agreement between the two sides was finally reached at Addis Ababa in April 1972.

At the latest anniversary celebrations both President Nemery and Vice-President Alair told the large crowds that all Sudanese must work together to build a greater nation.

SYNOPSIS: Thousands of people turned out in the main stadium in Port Sudan to take part in the Fourth Anniversary of Sudanese Unity.

The President of the Sudan, Major-General Jaafar el-Nemery, also attended the celebrations. It was four years ago that the people of the North and South Sudan agreed to a united Sudan after fifteen years of civil war.

The Sudanese Vice-President, Mr. Abel Alair, watched the celebrations with great interest. Mr. Alair is also head of the Sudanese Southern Region People's Assembly.

President Nemery told the huge crowd that all the people of the Sudan must work together in co-operation to build a better nation. The President told the children that they must forget their fathers' quarrels and work for a better, united Sudan.
