Background: Brazilian Health Authorities launched a massive campaign to vaccinate 12 million people against meningitis in the Sao Paulo area on Tuesday (22 April).
Nearly 300 vaccination teams are taking part in the five-day campaign in the country's greatest metropolitan area against the disease, which killed more that 4,000 people throughout Brazil last year.
From Sao Paulo, the vaccination teams will move to other pats of the country and hope to inoculate between 80 and 100 million Brazilians.
The authorities decided to step up the campaign after an alarming increase in the number of persons hospitalised during the first four months of this year. In Sao Paulo alone, 7,000 were taken to hospitals--five times higher than the number for the same period last year.
This year's widely publicised campaign is a sharp contrast to the attempt by the Government to cover up on the epidemic last year.
