Background: Seven thousand spectators in Niamoy's National Stadium last week saw Niger overwhelm the Upper Volta national side 4-1 in a friendly match.
The ease of the victory was something of a surprise, since the Niger team had only come together 48 hours before the kick-off, whereas the Upper Volta side had reputedly spent two weeks preparing for the match.
Both sides showed plenty of attacking flair in the early stages, but it was Niger who took the lead after 20 minutes, when Boule let lease a shot that goalkeeper Kanazos could do nothing to stop.
But the goal had an oddly inhibiting effect on the home side, and in the 40th minute, Upper Volta drew level. Corneille was the scorer.
Just before the interval, the Niger side regained its rhythm and completely dominated play. Moussa Saley made the score 2-1. Niger continued on their winning way after the interval with further goals from Yakouba Yaye and Moussa Saley.
