One of Argentina's most popular and successful soccer clubs, Boca Juniors, has asked the government of money in a desperate bid to avoid losing its stadium and top players. Boca were forced to field a team of youngsters for their match against traditional rivals River Plate on November 11 after nine of their top players refused to turn out for the club, claiming that they are owed one month's wages and other fees. River Plate took full advantage of their opponent's financial dilemma to run rings round Boca's youngsters and win by four goals to one. Security was tight outside the ground before the game, following clashes between Boca supporters and home fans at a fixture of Chacarita Juniors on November 4. After a goalless first half, River Plate took the lead in the 55th minute when Norberto Alonso's well-struck shot from 25 metres caught out Boca reserve goalkeeper Median, slipping through his arms and into the net. Two minutes later River Plate goalkeeper Pumpido, not to be outdone by his opposite number, dropped a soft shot into the path of Boca forward Herrera to allow the visitors to draw level. A corner in the 70th minute was only half-cleared by Boca's disorganised defence, allowing the ball to be floated back into the area for alonso to head his second goal of the game. Boca's frantic attempts to stop the River Plate tide then results in their conceding two clumsy penalties, both for unnecessary trips. Enzo Francescoli converted the first with ease on the stroke of full time, and then found himself again stepping up for a second spot kick minutes into injury time. His kick passed straight through a hole in the roof of the net, giving the impression that he had missed the goal altogether. After a great deal of confusion and heated debate on both sides, the referee correctly awarded the goal and then quickly blew for full time. After the match, Boca Juniors' president said that he had asked the government for immediate financial aid, adding that the club desperately needed two hundred thousand dollars b
y the end of the year. Meanwhile, the Argentine Football Players' Union has stated that they will begin an indefinite strike on November 16 in support of the Boca players and in protest against an Argentine Football Association decision to close the Boca stadium because of recent outbreaks of violence during matches.
