South African naval personnel, equipped with two high powered searchlights, have been called in to help police at Cato Manor, Durban, scene of severe rioting June 18-19. VISNEWS June 20 filmed the searchlights sweeping the 'shanty town' native quarter looking for further outbreaks during the hours of darkness.

The situation continues quiet. Schoolchildren have been enlisted to help clear up wreckage before schools re-opened. An accumulation of refuse is a source of danger to the health of the whole city. Eleven community centres, set up to feed children of the abounding poor, were among premises destroyed when the women went on the rampage. Total damage is estimated at GBP250,000.

Rioting broke out when police placed a ban on home brewed beer, and destroyed illicit stills with which African women made liquor. At least two natives were killed and a number admitted to hospital. 51 women were arrested and remanded until June 23.

Police used tear-gas to disperse demonstrating Zulu women in another Durban African suburb, Kwa Mashu, June 22. Protesting against the metering of this new suburb's water supply, their threatened to destroy the pipes.

In another African suburb, Clermont, women picketed the municipal bus services. The services were eventually suspended.
