  • Description

FOR MOST OF THE 6,000 MEN, AND CHILDREN STRANDED AT KENNEDY INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT BY THE WEEKEND BLIZZARD, THE ONLY HOPE OF A FLIGHT OUT WAS BY HELICOPTER BACK TO NEW YORK CITY.

WORK BEGAN EARLY ON CLEARING DEEP SNOWDRIFTS FROM THE RUNWAYS, AND MINIMAL AIR SERVICES BEGAN YESTERDAY (11 FEB). BUT ACCESS ROADS TO THE AIRPORT WERE STILL BLOCKED.

HELICOPTERS BROUGHT FOOD AND BLANKETS TO THE COLD AND HUNGRY PEOPLE STRANDED AT THE AIRPORT AND BEGAN FLYING THEM OUT TO A HELICOPTER NEAR WALL STREET.

THEY ALSO FLEW IN URGENT GOODS TO CATCH THE FIRST FLIGHTS OUT OF THE AIRPORT, LIKE THESE BAGS FROM VISNEWS, NEW YORK, CONTAINING FILM OF THE CITY PARALYSED BY THE BLIZZARD.

(IN NEW YORK THERE WAS MOUNTING CRITICISM OF THE ACTION TAKEN TO CLEAR THE SNOW, AND OF THE SHORTAGE OF EMERGENCY SUPPLIES AT KENNEDY AIRPORT.)
