Background: Two United states helicopter pilots who were shot down over Laos were interviewed Saturday (6 March) after they spent three days walking through the jungle to get back to South Vietnam.

The pilots said the only way they could get back to an American base was on foot. North Vietnamese soldiers were in the area, but the two men avoided them. They also faced the hazard of American gunships firing at suspected North Vietnamese encampments in the area.

At one point they saw a smoke grenade and through it might be a rescue helicopter, since a number of downed Americans have been rescued, but in this case there was no rescue mission, so they continued walking and finally made it back across the border to South Vietnam.
