  • Description

AUSTRIA AND THE SOVIET UNION CALLED YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) FOR MORE EFFORTS TOWARDS CO-OPERATION AMONG THE NATIONS OF EUROPE. A COMMUNIQUE ISSUED ON THE RETURN OF AUSTRIAN CHANCELLOR JOSEF KLAUS TO VIENNA AFTER AN EIGHT-DAY VISIT TO MOSCOW SAID "EFFORTS AIMED AT IMPROVING THE EUROPEAN SITUATION SHOULD BE SUPPORTED AND FURTHERED BY ALL MEANS."
THE SIX-PAGE COMMUNIQUE ADDED: "ANY REVIVAL OF THE NATIONAL-SOCIALIST IDEOLOGY, WHICH BROUGHT SO MUCH SUFFERING TO THE PEOPLE'S OF EUROPE, MUST BE PREVENTED BY ALL MEANS IN THE INTERESTS OF THE MAINTENANCE OF PEACE."
NO MENTION WAS MADE OF RUSSIA'S STRONG OPPOSITION TO AUSTRIAN EFFORTS TO LINK-UP ECONOMICALLY WITH THE EUROPEAN COMMON MARKET. IT NOTED ONLY THAT AUSTRIA'S INDEPENDENCE AND HER SELF-IMPOSED NEUTRALITY "REPRESENTED A VALUABLE CONTRIBUTION TO THE SAFEGUARDING OF PEACE IN EUROPE AND TO THE RELAXATION OF INTERNATIONAL TENSION."
DR. KLAUS AND SOVIET PRIME MINISTER ALEXI KOSYGIN AGREED THEIR GOVERNMENTS WOULD CONTINUE NEGOTIATIONS ON A SOVIET PLAN TO SUPPLY AUSTRIA WITH NATURAL GAS BY A PIPELINE FROM THE URALS.

DESPITE HIS FAILURE TO MOVE THE SOVIET GOVERNMENT ON THE COMMON MARKET ISSUE THE CHANCELLOR SAID HIS FIRST VISIT TO MOSCOW HAD BEEN A SUCCESS AND HIS TALKS USEFUL.
