  • Description

NORWEGIAN POLICE ARRESTED 28 YOUNG PEOPLE, SOME OF THEM GIRLS, DURING CLASHES WITH 300 ANTI-APARTHEID DEMONSTRATORS ON THE SECOND DAY OF THE SOUTH AFRICA - NORWAY DAVIS CUP TENNIS TIE IN OSLO TONIGHT (SATURDAY).

POLICE, INCLUDING SOME ON HORSEBACK WERE OUT IN FORCE FOR THE SECOND NIGHT IN SUCCESSION TO CORDON OFF THE MADSERUD CENTRE COURT, WHERE THE MATCH WAS TO BE PLAYED. THEY TRIED TO KEEP THE DEMONSTRATORS AT A DISTANCE OF 500 METRES FROM THE COURT. HOWEVER THE MARCHERS FORCED THEIR WAY THROUGH THE BARRIER AND STAGED A SIT-DOWN 200 METRES FROM THE COURT. MANY CARRIED BANNERS DENOUNCING SOUTH AFRICAN POLICIES OF APARTHEID. AS THEY SAT IN THE ROAD, THEY SANG "WE SHALL OVERCOME" AND "WE ARE NOT AFRAID".

POLICE LIFTED MANY OF THE DEMONSTRATORS INTO POLICE CARS AND DROVE THEM AWAY. EYEWITNESSES SAID THAT SOME OF THE YOUNG PEOPLE HAD BEEN INJURED BY BATON-CHARGING POLICEMEN. LATER IT WAS ANNOUNCED THAT ALL THOSE ARRESTED HAD BEEN RELEASED AFTER QUESTIONING.

LAST YEAR'S DAVIS CUP TIE AGAINST SOUTH AFRICA HAD TO BE PLAYED AT A SECRET VENUE AFTER DEMONSTRATORS STORMED THE COURT, TORE DOWN THE NET AND LAY ON THE COURT.

SOUTH AFRICA'S PLAYERS TONIGHT INCREASED THEIR POINTS LEAD TO 3-0 IN THE MATCH. POLICE PLAN TO MAINTAIN THE CORDON AROUND THE COURT UNTIL AFTER THE FINAL MATCHES ON SUNDAY.
