Background: A fact-finding mission organised by the Socialist International and led by the austrian Chancellor, Dr. Bruno Kreisky, has visited the United Arab Emirates (UEA) and Syria.
The six member delegation was in Abu Dhabi for talks with UAE officials on Sunday (21 March). Dr. Kreisky was welcomed at Abu Dhabi airport by the foreign Minister, Ahmad Khalifah As-Suwaidi.
Apart from acting as a fact-finding mission, the Socialist delegation wanted to assure the Arab states that the Socialist International organisation did not have an anti-Arab bias.
After leaving Abu Dhabi, the delegation flew to Damascus on Monday (22 March) where they had talks with syrian officials led by the Prime Minister, Mahmoud A1-Ayoubi. Damascus was the last stop on the tour which took the delegation to Kuwait, Iraq, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia.
Dr. Kreisky said in Damascus that the socialist parties would, no doubt, take a positive attitude towards the rights of the Arab Palestinian people, and that recognition of these rights would be decisive in finding a peaceful settlement in the area.
Representatives of West German, Swedish, Italian and French socialist parties went on the mission with Dr. Kreisky.
SYNOPSIS: The Austrian Chancellor, Dr. Bruno Kreisky, arrived in Abu Dhabi on Sunday, leading a fact finding mission for the Socialist International organisation. Dr. Kreisky was welcomed by the United Arab Emirates Foreign Minister Ahmad Khalifah As-Suwaidi, and other officials.
The socialist delegation, which has representatives of West German, Swedish, Italian and French parties also wanted to assure the Arabs that the Socialist International did not have an anti-Arab bias.

The six man team had already visited Kuwait, Iraq, Jordan and Saudi Arabia during its Middle East tour. In Damascus, Dr. Kreisky said that the Socialist parties would no doubt take a positive attitude towards the rights of the Arab palestinian people.
Dr. Kreisky said that recognition of these rights would be decisive in finding a peaceful settlement in the area. Damascus was the last stop on the tour.
