    A delegation from the Soviet Union - headed by a senior Party official - has been having talks with members of the Iraqi government in Baghdad.

    The delegation arrived in the Iraqi capital on Tuesday (27 November). The next day Mr. Boris Ponomarev - a designate member of the Soviet Politburo - led his group in talks with a number of representatives of the Revolutionary Command Council. Vice Chairman of the RCC Mr. Saddam Hussein took part in talks lasting two hours with the Soviet delegation. Mr. Ponomarev went on for more talks with President Ahmed Hassan Al-Bakr. He handed the President a letter from the Soviet Communist Party leader Mr. Leonid Brezhnev.

    Full details of the two sessions of talks were not disclosed. The official Iraq news agency, INA, said both parties stressed the importance of close relations between Iraq and the Soviet Union. The agency said the two groups discussed current conditions in the Middle East.
