  • Description

An Italian Government representative said on Saturday (11 September) that the United States had set an example "high morality" in returning to Italy a valuable Raphael painting illegally exported two years ago.

Sionor Rodolfo Siviero, head of the Government's office for the recovery of works of art from abroad, said it was the first time that any country had returned a smuggled work of art without asking for any form of reimbursement.

The painting is a small "Portrait of a Young Girl" measuring about 10 1/2 inches by 8 1/2 inches (about 27 by 21.5 centimetres) painted by the Italian renaissance master about 1505. But its return to Italy was the only bright spot for Signor Siviero in a week overshadowed by art thefts of much greater value from Italian churches.
