  • Description

TWO BRITISH MINISTERS ON A FACT-FINDING VISIT TO RHODESIA YESTERDAY (MONDAY) MET A DELEGATION FROM THE BANNED ZIMBABWE AFRICAN NATIONAL UNION. THE MINISTERS -- THE COMMONWEALTH SECRETARY, MR ARTHUR BOTTOMLEY, AND THE LORD CHANCELLOR, LORD GARDINER -- WIND UP THEIR TEN-DAY SURVEY TOMORROW.

THE MEETING TOOK PLACE AT THE NEW SARUM MILITARY AIR BASE. THE ZANU DELEGATES -- WHO HAD BEEN FLOWN TO THE BASE FROM THEIR RESTRICTION CENTRE -- PRESSED CLAIMS FOR AN INDEPENDENT RHODESIA BY MAJORITY RULE.

DEMANDING IMMEDIATE ACTION, THEY TOLD THE MINISTERS THAT ANY DELAY IN A CONSTITUTIONAL CONFERENCE COULD BUILD INTER-RACIAL HOSTILITY AND LEAD TO BLOODSHED. THE MEETING LASTED TWO HOURS.

AFTERWARDS, MR BOTTOMLEY TOLD REPORTERS THAT IT WAS HIS INTENTION TO FIND A WAY FOR THE BRITISH AND RHODESIAN GOVERNMENTS AND THE AFRICAN NATIONALISTS TO ARRIVE AT A SOLUTION "WHEREBY THERE COULD BE A PEACEFUL TRANSITION TO MAJORITY RULE." BUT, HE ADDED, "I DO NOT SAY OR WHEN."
OPPOSITION TO THIS INTENTION WILL COME TODAY WHEN THE MINISTERS MEET THE RHODESIAN PRIME MINISTER, MR IAN SMITH. HE WANTS IMMEDIATE INDEPENDENCE UNDER WHITE MINORITY RULE, A PROPOSAL SUPPORTED BY RHODESIA'S 200 TRIDAL CHIEFS AND HEADMEN.
