M. Hourari Boumedienne of Algeria was elected as President on Friday (10 December) in the first election for the position since the Algerian coup in 1965.
SYNOPSIS: President Boumedienne has ruled Algeria as head of the Council of Revolution since the coup. On Thursday (16 December) he took the oath of office in a simple ceremony at the People's Palace.
His oath of office said that he was faithful to the revolution and those who died in it, and he pledged to glorify Islam and defend the country's charter, constitution, and laws. He promised to respect the choice of socialism and to preserve the nation's integrity, unity and rights.
President Boumedienne was elected by 89 per cent of Algerian voters in the election of 10 December. He was the only candidate. At his swearing-in, he pledged to work unremittingly for Algeria's development and happiness and to work with all his strength to achieve the great ideals of world justice, freedom and peace. Under the new constitution President Boumedienne will have wide powers. He will be Head of State, the Armed forces, the government, and national defence.
