  • Description

Australia's challenge yacht for the America's Cup was officially named 'The Southern Cross" at a ceremony at Yanchep in Western Australia on Saturday (12 January). Until now the yacht has been known unofficially as 'Australia'.

The Governor of Western Australia, Air Commodore Hughie Edwards, opened a sealed envelope to reveal the name. The Governor's wife, Mrs. Edwards, made two unsuccessful attempts before smashing the traditional bottle of champagne against the yellow hull.

After the ceremony the guests boarded two launches to watch the Southern Cross sail in a trial against the former America's Cup challenger Gretel Two. The America's Cup series will be held off Newport in the United States later this year.
