Background: THE HAMBURG, THE FIRST PASSENGER LINER BUILT BY WEST GERMANY SINCE 1938, MOVED OUT OF HAMBURG HARBOUR YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) TO BE OFFICIALLY HANDED OVER TO HER NEW OWNERS, THE GERMAN ATLANTIC LINE. THE SHIP WAS EXACTLY ON SCHEDULE.

THE 25,000-TON SHIP WAS PLAGUED BY TURBINE TROUBLES AS SHE WAS BEING BUILT, LEADING TO A THREE-WEEK POSTPONEMENT OF SEA TRIALS IN JANUARY. NEVERTHELESS, THE FAULTS WERE CORRECTED IN TIME TO MEET THE DEADLINE FOR TODAY'S HANDING-OVER CEREMONY OFF THE ELBE ESTUARY.

A NUMBER OF INVITED GUESTS WERE ABOARD THE HAMBURG WHEN SHE LEFT THE HARBOUR YESTERDAY. SHE LATER RETURNED TO PORT.

DESIGNED TO CARRY BETWEEN 600 AND 800 PASSENGERS, THE HAMBURG IS BEING PRESENTED AS THE WORLD'S MOST MODERN LINER, WITH INDIVIDUAL BATHROOMS, TELEVISION AND PASSENGER-CONTROLLED AIR CONDITIONING IN EVERY CABIN.

THE HAMBURG IS ABOUT 639 FEET (195M) LONG, 89 FEET (27 M) WIDE AND 62 FEET (19 M.) HIGH. DESIGNED AS A DUAL-PURPOSE SHIP, FOR BOTH CRUISING AND TRANSATLANTIC SERVICE, SHE IS DUE TO MAKE HER MAIDEN VOYAGE TO WEST AFRICA AND SOUTH AMERICA ON MARCH 30.
