  • Description

Tunisia has begun taking toll of its flood losses, while the military forces of several countries help alleviate the consequent suffering.

It appears 86 people died and 53,000 became homeless in the floods of last week. About 10,000 sheep and goats were swept away, and 20,000 hectares (50,000 acres) of crops were ruined. There was also widespread damage to roads, railways, bridges and communications facilities.

France sent the aircraft carrier Arromang, with II helicopters, boats, divers and a field hospital. Libya and Italy contributed helicopters to the relief operations. They supplemented efforts of the Tunisian army in ferrying food and essential supplies to flood victims and cut-off communities. President Habib Bourguiba has also thanked the United States, which sent four warships to the country last week.
