TRANSCRIPT: SEQ. 2: QUESTION: "IN THE EVENT OF UDI, WOULD YOU SUPPORT IT?"

ANSWER: "IN THE EVENT OF UDI, I FEEL THAT IT WOULD BE THE DUTY OF EVERY INDIVIDUAL IN THIS COUNTRY TO DO HIS BEST TO SEE THAT LAW AND ORDER WAS MAINTAINED. IT IS OF COURSE APPRECIATED THAT ONCE UDI WOULD BE TAKEN, THE CONSTITUTION, AS IT EXISTS NOW, DISAPPEARS. A REVOLUTIONARY GOVERNMENT HAS GOT TO BE SET UP. THIS IS JUST HARD REALITY, AND IN NO CIRCUMSTANCES DO I THINK IT WOULD BE A VERY RISKY PERIOD. I, OF COURSE, WOULD BACK THE EFFECTIVE GOVERNMENT AT THAT STAGE OF MAINTAIN LAW AND ORDER IN THIS COUNTRY, AND I THINK THAT IS THE PROPER ATTITUDE."

SEQ. 3: QUESTION: "BEARING IN MIND THAT YOU, OF COURSE, DO NOT HAVE ACCESS TO SECURITY FILES, I WOULD ASK YOU TO COMMENT ON THE FORMER SOUTHERN RHODESIAN PREMIER, MR. GARFIELD TODD'S RESTRICTION."

SEQ. 4: ANSWER: "WELL, AS YOU KNOW, IN THE DAYS WHEN I WAS FEDERAL PRIME MINISTER, I WAS RESPONSIBLE, AS HEAD OF THE GOVERNMENT, FOR SEEING A NUMBER OF PEOPLE DEPARTED OUT OF THE COUNTRY. I HAD TO FACE THE OPPROBRIUM THAT WAS ASSOCIATED WITH IT, AND OF COURSE THOSE ACTS WERE ALSO TAKEN IN SECRECY -- THERE WAS NO QUESTION OF DISCLOSING THE EVIDENCE AGAINST THESE PEOPLE OR TELLING THEM WHY THEY WERE NO LONGER ALLOWED TO STAY IN THE COUNTRY, OR WHY, THEY WERE REFUSED PERMISSION TO COME IN. SO, IN THE CIRCUMSTANCES, I DON'T SEE THAT I WOULD BE BEHAVING VERY RESPONSIBLY IF I WERE TO BE CRITICAL OF THE GOVERNMENT'S ACTIONS. GENERALLY, I DON'T LIKE, AND I DIDN'T LIKE IT, WHEN I WAS FEDERAL PRIME MINISTER. I DID NOT LIKE EXCLUDING PEOPLE, OR TELLING THEM TO GET OUT, OR DETAINING, OR ARRESTING PEOPLE WITHOUT AN EXPLANATION. BUT I'M NOT PREPARED TO CRITICISE THE GOVERNMENT BECAUSE I DON'T KNOW THE FULL STORY. IT MAY BE THAT THEY HAVE FULL JUSTIFICATION FOR IT. I JUST DON'T KNOW."

INTERVIEWER: "SIR ROY WELENSKY, THANK YOU VERY MUCH."
