NUCLEAR-POWERED SHIPS -- NOW NUCLEAR-POWERED LIGHTHOUSES: THE WORLD'S FIRST NUCLEAR POWERED LIGHTHOUSE BECAME OPERATIONAL YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY), IN TIME TO WELCOME THE WORLD'S FIRST NUCLEAR MERCHANT SHIP 'SAVANNAH' WHEN SHE ARRIVED IN BALTIMORE HARBOUR.

THE NEW LIGHTHOUSE, SITUATED IN CHESAPEAKE BAY, ON THE UNITED STATES EAST COAST, HAS SUFFICIENT FUEL TO DRIVE ITS GENERATOR FOR 500 YEARS. IT WILL BE UNMANNED, AND SHOULD THE EXPERIMENT PROVE SUCCESSFUL, IT'S LIKELY THAT OTHER AMERICAN LIGHTHOUSES WILL BE CONVERTED TO USE NUCLEAR FUEL.

THE GENERATOR WAS DEVELOPED BY THE UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION AND BUILT BY THE NUCLEAR DIVISION OF THE MARTIN COMPANY OF BALTIMORE. EARLY ON WEDNESDAY, THE 4,000 POUND UNIT WAS TRANSFERRED TO ITS NEW HOME ABOARD THE U.S. COAST GUARD TENDER 'WHITE PINE'.

ALL WINDOWS, DOORS, HATCHES AND OTHER MEANS OF ACCESS HAVE BEEN SEALED UP WITH STEEL PLATING AND SIGNS HAVE BEEN POSTED WARNING POSSIBLE TRESPASSERS OF THE RADIOLOGICAL HAZARD.
