  • Description

WITH ONLY ABOUT 80 MILES (128 KMS) OF THE HELL RUN BETWEEN ZAMBIA AND THE TANZANIAN COAST LEFT UNTARRED TRUCK DRIVERS ON THE 1200 MILES ROUTE FACE LESS RISKS. ON TUESDAY (DECEMBER 10.), ZAMBIA'S MINISTER OF WORKS AND HOUSING, MR. PETER MATOKA, OPENED THE KAPIRI MPOSHI - SERENJE SECTION.

THE NEW SECTION IS A 120 MILE (192 KMS) STRETCH OF THE GREAT NORTH ROAD WHICH IS TARRED ALMOST TO THE BORDER WITH TANZANIA.

ZAMBIA - TANZANIA ROAD SERVICES, JOINTLY OWNED BY THE ZAMBIAN AND TANZANIAN GOVERNMENTS AND THE FIAT COMPANY OF ITALY, THIS YEAR INCREASED CHARGES FOR HAULING GOODS OVER THE ROUTE. THEY ARE THE MAIN OPERATORS.

THE COMPANY WAS FORMED AFTER RHODESIA'S SEIZURE OF INDEPENDENCE FROM BRITAIN THREATENED ZAMBIAN SUPPLY LINKS TO THE SOUTH AND HALTED FUEL SUPPLIES. SINCE THEN MANY OF ITS VEHICLES, AND THOSE OF PRIVATE OPERATORS, HAVE CRASHED OR BEEN DAMAGED ON THE GREAT NORTH ROAD LINKING ZAMBIA AND DAR ES SALAAM.

IN FEBRUARY, HEAVY RAINS CHURNED THE ROAD INTO MUD NEAR THE BORDER IN SOUTHERN TANZANIA. THIS DISRUPTED THE NORMALLY HEAVY SUPPLIES OF PETROL FLOWING INTO LANDLOCKED ZAMBIA.
