  • Description

Weather conditions in the Karkoram Mountains,Pakistan, have improved in the last few days and helicopters are again flying in urgently needed supplies to the earthquake devastated area. Four days of high winds prevented the helicopters flying through the 40-mile long (65 km) narrow valley hit by the earthquake eight days ago. Refugee camps have been set up near the villages destroyed by the quake. Tents and medical supplies were the most urgent need and with the arrival of the helicopters survivors now have somewhere to shelter.

The latest death toll is reported to be 5,200.

Thousands of survivors are stranded along the narrow valley. All roads into the area have been cut by fallen rock and aircraft are the only means of bringing in aid. Meantime, a party of United States Congressmen and Government officials have arrived in Islamabad. Their visit was planned before the earthquake, but when news of the disaster was heard, they brought in nearly two thousand pounds of medical supplies.

The United States is just one of the nations which has pledged aid to Pakistan. Among the donor is Libya which has promised 16 million dollars (nearly GBP7 million sterling).
