  • Description

This autumn will see the finishing touches to a 23-storey, 200-foot sky-scraper, the first of its kind, in Paris, France.

Begun in October, 1958, the sky-scraper contains 116 residential apartments - 406 rooms in all. Seventy-three municipal committees had to be satisfied before construction began, since building in Paris is limited, usually, to 31 meters. A condition of erection was that the sixth floor should be a roof-garden, open to the public.

A novel use of reinforced concrete makes the building remarkably light for its size - just 12,000 tons-and oil-burners high on the roof - rather than in the basement or at street level - minimise unpleasant odours and smoke.
