  • Description

Nine people died at Chicago's O'Hare Airport in the United States on Wednesday (20 December) when North Central Airlines DC-9 struck the tail section of a taxiing aircraft, while taking off.

The wings of the DC-9 were town off as the aircraft careered several hundred feet along the runway and burst into flames. Seventeen people were injured in the crash--15 aboard the DC-9 and two aboard the taxiing Delta Airlines Convair 880, carrying 93 passengers.

Investigators of the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said the Delta aircraft, on its way to the terminal, was taxiing in the wrong part of the airfield.

The ground controller who was supervising the Delta aircraft at the time was reported to be in a "state of collapse" following the accident.
