Background: TRAGEDY MARRED THE LE MANS 24-HOUR ENDURANCE RACE SOON AFTER IT GOT UNDERWAY TODAY (SATURDAY) WHEN BRAZILIAN DRIVER BIND HEINS AGED 25, DIED AFTER HIS ALPINE RENAULT CRASHED IN A FIVE CAR PILE-UP.

THE FATAL PILE-UP FOLLOWED AN EXPLOSION WHICH STOPPED NEW ZEALAND'S BRUCE MACLAREN IN HIS ASTON MARTIN AND SPEWED OIL OVER THE TRACK. TWO DRIVER WENT TO HOSPITAL AFTER THE ACCIDENT. THE BRAZILIAN DRIVER WAS DEAD BEFORE HE REACHED THE HOSPITAL.

AFTER 500 KILOMETRES (312.5 MILES) THE RACE SETTLED DOWN WITH EIGHT OF THE LEADING TEN CARS FERRARIS. MIKE PARKES(BRITAIN) WAS LEADING.

MEXICO'S PEDRO RODRIGUEZ, DRIVING A FERRARI, WAS A FAVOURITE FOR TOP HONOURS BEFORE THE RACE STARTED. IT IS REGARDED AS THE TOUGHEST TEST IN THE MOTORING CALENDAR. THE AMERICAN,PHIL HILL, IN AN ASTON MARTIN TOOK THE LEAD EARLY. BUT A FERRARI CREPT INTO FIRST PLACE AT THE END OF THE FIRST LAP.

GRAHAM HILL, BRITAIN'S WORLD GRAND PRIX DRIVING CHAMPION,AND HIS BRM TEAM MATE RICHIE GINTHER OF CALIFORNIA COULD MAKE MOTORING HISTORY IN THE RACE - THE FIRST TIME THERE HAS BEEN A GAS TURBINE CAR COMPETING. THE BRITISH ROVER BRM PROTOTYPE IS BASED ON THE FORMULA ONE BRM CHASSIS WHICH WON THE WORLD DRIVERS' AND MANUFACTURERS' CHAMPIONSHIPS LAST YEAR. WITH A QUARTER OF THE RACE OVER THE CAR WAS "GOING LIKE A BOMB", HILL TOLD NEWSMEN.
