  • Description

TEN PEOPLE WERE INJURED WHEN ABOUT THREE THOUSAND ITALIAN WAR INVALIDS, DEMANDING HIGHER PENSIONS, CLASHED WITH POLICE IN THE CENTRE OF ROME YESTERDAY (TUESDAY).

THE INVALIDS, SOME OF THEM IN WHEELCHAIRS, WENT FIRST TO THE ITALIAN SENATE WHERE A DEPUTATION WAS RECEIVED. THE DEMONSTRATORS WERE NOT SATISFIED WITH THE SENATE'S REACTION AND RAN ON TO THE PRIME MINISTER'S OFFICE IN THE CENTRE OF ROME.

AT THE PRIME MINISTER'S OFFICE, THE DEMONSTRATORS STAGED A SIT-DOWN STRIKE AND BLOCKED TRAFFIC IN TWO OF ROME'S BUSIEST STREETS AS WELL AS THE SQUARE OUTSIDE THE CHAMBER OF DEPUTIES. POLICE MOVED IN TO BREAK UP THE DEMONSTRATION AND FIGHT BROKE OUT IN WHICH TEN PEOPLE WERE INJURED.

THE WAR INVALIDS CLAIM THAT TWO-THIRDS OF THEIR NUMBER HAVE RECEIVED THE SAME PENSION SINCE 1951 -- A PENSION WHICH RANGES FROM ABOUT GBP3 A MONTH TO ABOUT GBP13 A MONTH.
