  • Description

SV: Leader of Panhellic socialist Party, Mr. Andreas seated at desk, speaking.

PAPANDREOU: "In the elections of the 20th November, PASOK was the sole victor. PASOK has really done an unusual thing. It has succeeded in doubling its forces among the people in three years' time. The reasons basically are the positions of PASOK because PASOK represents the quest of the Greek people for social change; for a national force for the weak and for an economic and social policy that serves the needs of the working man in Greece. Perhaps it represents an intermediate stage, in a course which will soon, we hope, lead the Greek people to power, and the transformation of our society. So that instead of being controlled by monopolies it will be controlled by its own people. So that Greece will truly belong to the Greeks."

According to the official preliminary results, of the 300 seats at stake, Mr. Karamanlis' Democracy Party won 174, as against 215 in the last Parliament. The Greek Communists won three extra seats, giving them a total of 11. The Democratic Centre Union (DCU) won 15 seats, and other small parties nine seats between them. Although Mr. Karamanlis' majority is a comfortable one, there is a significant shift to the lief tin the parliament as a whole.
