  • Description

French President de Gaulle, on day-two of his six-day State visit to Italy, was filmed by VISNEWS June 24 with Italian President Gronchi during a visit to the historic battlefields of San Martino and Solferino.

One hundred years age at San Martino-Solferino a Franco-Sardinian army, under the command of Napoleon the Third, defeated an army commanded by Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph, thus laying the foundations of modern independent Italy.

During a train journey conference enroute to Rome June 24th, the two Presidents reached agreements which, according to De Gaulle, "will be of the greatest importance for the future of Europe and of the whole world." Assisted by Foreign Ministers Pella and Couve de Murville, the two Presidents talked for several hours.

On his arrival in the capital late at night, President de Gaulle cancelled a scheduled 101-gun salute. He did not wish, he said, to disturb the "well earned sleep of the hard working Romans."
President Gronchi, accredited with seeking for Italy more say in NATO and other Western alliances, has asked for a meeting of the NATO Council to be held before the Foreign Ministers' meeting resumes on July 13.
