  • Description

President Ferdinand Marcos returned to the Philippines on Wednesday (11 June) after a five-day state visit to China which resulted in the normalisation of relations between the two countries.

President Marcos flew in from Shanghai to a ??? welcome at Manila International Airport. Mrs. Marcos and one of their two daughters arrived on a separate Philippine Airline jet.

The establishment of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and China formally ended 25 years of mutually hostile foreign policies.

The Philippines severed all formal ties with Taiwan after the diplomatic accord was signed on Monday (9 June) between President Marcos and ailing Chinese Premier Chou En-lai in Peking.

The Philippines becomes the hundredth nation and the second member of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) to establish diplomatic relations with China.

Malaysia established formal ties with China last June, and Thailand has indicated it will follow suit by sending an official delegation to China next month.
