  • Description

FROM MANY POINTS IN EUROPE TODAY (FRIDAY) CARS SET CUT ON WHAT MAY BE ONE OF THE MOST TESTING MONTE CARLO RALLIES YET HELD. SUB-ZERO TEMPERATURES, FROST AND SNOW LIE AHEAD OF THE COMPETITORS TAKING PART IN THE RALLY, LASTING TWO DAYS AND TWO NIGHTS, AND ENDING ON THE MEDITERRANEAN COAST.

BY LATE THIS AFTERNOON MORE THAN 100 OF THE 200 CARS ENTERED IN THE RALLY HAD LEFT THEIR STARTING POINTS.

THIRTY NINE CARS STARTED THE RALLY AT LONDON, AND ENTERED THE FIRST GRUELLING STRETCH ON ICE AND SNOW PACKED ROADS IN KENT, NEAR DOVER. ON CROSSING THE ENGLISH CHANNEL THEY AGAIN HAD TO NEGOTIATE SNOW COVERED ROADS IN NORTHERN FRANCE.

IN SWEDEN COLD WEATHER ALSO HERALDED THE BEGINNING OF THE RACE, AND DRIVERS HAD TO NEGOTIATE SOME TRICKY CONDITIONS AT AN EARLY CHECKPOINT AT HALMSTAD, IN SWEDEN.

THE RALLY DRIVERS HAVE BEEN WARNED TO EXPECTED TREACHEROUS DRIVING CONDITIONS THROUGHOUT THE RALLY -- ONE OF THE TOUGHEST WINTER DRIVING EVENTS IN THE WORLD.
