    THE PURPOSE OF THE EXERCISE WAS TO TEST SCHEMES FOR SEALING OFF FOCAL POINTS IN CITY COMMUNICATIONS. THE POINT CHOSEN WAS THE FEHRSELLINER PLATZ, WHERE SEVEN MAIN TRAFFIC ROUTES CONVERSE ON THE OPEN SQUARE WHICH ALSO CONTAINS ENTRANCES TO AN UNDERGROUND STATION.

    AMERICAN TROOPS - OF THE BATTLE GROUP WHICH ARRIVED IN WEST BERLIN ON AUG 19 - HAD THEIR FIRST "OPERATIONAL READINESS TEST" EARLIER THE SAME DAY.
