  • Description

THE BURRINJUCK DAM NEAR YASS IN THE NEW SOUTH WALES SOUTHERN TABLELANDS - AND THE START OF AN UNUSUAL RACE. TWO BATHTUBS AND THEIR CREWS PREPARE FOR A LONG JOURNEY DOWN THE MURRUMBIDGIE RIVER. THE BATHTUBS ARE TRAVELLING FROM THE HEADWATERS OF THE RIVER TO THE TOWN OF GRIFFITH 430 MILES (700 KMS) DOWN THE RIVER.

THE TRIP IS A MONEY-RAISING STUNT ORGANISED BY THE YOUNGER SET OF THE GRIFFITH SPASTIC COUNCIL. TO MAKE THE TUBS STABLE, OUTRIGGER FLOATS ARE BOLTED TO THE SIDE.

EACH TUB HAS A CREW OF TWO FOR THE JOURNEY. HOWEVER, THE REGULAR CREWS ARE BEING RELIEVED FROM TIME TO TIME BY OTHER MEMBERS OF THE SPASTIC YOUNGER SET ACCOMPANYING THEM IN TWO ALUMINUM BOATS. A LAND PARTY IS FOLLOWING THEM DOWN THE RIVER BY ROAD.

THE LONG JOURNEY DOWN THE MURRUMBIDGIE IS EXPECTED TO TAKE ABOUT TWELVE DAYS. THE CREWS OF THE TUBS ESTIMATE THEY WILL ARRIVE AT DARLING POINT ON THE RIVER NEAR GRIFFITH TWO DAYS BEFORE CHRISTMAS.

ALTHOUGH THE OUTRIGGER FLOATS MAKE THE TUBS VERY STABLE CRAFT THESE RAPIDS ABOVE JUCIONG PROVIDE A ROUGH RIDE AND A FEW TUMBLES. EVEN THE ALUMINUM BOATS FIND THIS SECTION A TOUGH ONE. ALL THE CREWS GOT WET IN THE RAPIDS AND THEY WERE UNABLE TO START OUTBOARD MOTORS WHICH HAD BEEN SWAMPED.

THE CREWS PUT IN TO THE BANK TO DRY OFF AND GET THE MOTORS GOING AGAIN. MOST DECIDED TO BAIL OUT THEIR CRAFT RATHER THAN PULL OUT THE PLUG. AT LAST REPORT THE BATHTUB MARINERS WERE WELL AHEAD OF SCHEDULE ... THEY'RE COLLECTING MONEY FOR THE SPASTIC COUNCIL AT CENTRES ALONG THE RIVER.
