  • Description

Paris -- King Hussein of Jordan, currently on a brief visit to the French capital, paid a visit to French President Charles de Gaulle in Paris on September 10th, and spent forty-five minutes talking with him about the general world situation and the problems of the Middle East.

Hussein is the first Middle East Arab leader and Chief of State to visit Paris since the outbreak of the Algerian War in 1954.Observers interpreted President de Gaulle's action in seeing the Jordani king as an indication that France wishes to revive her waning influence in the Middle East and Asia Minor.

Informed sources said that the French President was anxious to moderate Gamel Nasser's Pan-Arab policy aimed at expelling the Israelis and ousting Jordan's Hashemite, pro-Western monarchy. The sources added that Franco-Jordanian relations were close and emphasised that Hussein's visit may help strength his throne against potential threats from the U.A.R.

France has not had diplomatic relations with Jordan's neighbours, Egypt or Syria, since the abortive 1956 Franco-British Suez invasion.

Although on a private visit, the 28-year-old Hashemite King received a semi-State welcome when he arrived in Paris on September 9th in a special Comet jetliner which he piloted for the part of his journey from Teheran.

King Hussein is accompanied by his brother, Prince Hassan, who acts as an adviser, and Jordani Prime Minister Sheriff Hussein Ben Nasser. His English-born wife, who is expecting their second child, remained in Jordan.

After the 45-minute session of talks, King Hussein was guest of honour at an Elysee Palace luncheon attended by French Premier Georges Pompidou and Foreign Minister Couve de Murville.
