Background: President Maria Estela Peron attended Air Force Day ceremonies on Tuesday (12 August) at E1 Palomar Airbase near Buenos Aires. Mrs. Peron, who has been suffering from exhaustion and nervous strain in the face of political and economic difficulties, had planned to take a vacation this week but cancelled it in order to attend the ceremonies.
During the ceremony, she watched as troops paraded past reviewing stand and jets roared by overhead. She sat between the Minister of Defence, Jorge Garrido and the Air Force Chief, Brigadier Hector Fautario.
Her appearance came in the wake of her latest cabinet reshuffle. The day before, her entire cabinet resigned. She immediately named five new ministers and has since named a sixth, Sr. Antonio Cafiero, to become Economics Minister, a hot seat in Argentina which has been filled by five men since May.
Already some opposition is reported to be developing to one of her new ministers. Argentina's military chiefs are reported to be considering a demand that Colonel Vincente Damasco, the new Interior Minister, either resign from his military post or quit as a cabinet minister. It's reported that the military chiefs are not happy with the presence of the military man in the Peronist Government.
