Background: Brazil's shanty-town dwellers have again been hard hit by severe flooding. On Saturday and Sunday (2-3 January), more than two and a half thousand people were made homeless after a series of tropical rainstorms caused rivers to burst their tanks. There are some 280 shanty-towns around Rio de Janiero, including the settlement of Belford Roxo. Here the damage was extensive. Local people dug trenches around buildings which had escaped flood damage so far to prevent further flooding. At least six people have died, including a 23 year old man, whose body was carried by relatives and friends to his house. People who had lost their homes took refuge in the local schoolhouse. The latest disaster follows on from the series of rainstorms in Brazil last month, which left more than fifty people dead in the area around Rio. Bitter criticism has been levelled at the Rio authorities for their lack of flood preparations.
