    A SPACE EXHIBITION - THE BIGGEST YET STAGED IN FRANCE - WAS OPENED TODAY (TUESDAY) IN PARIS BY M. GASTON PALEWSKI, MINISTER IN CHARGE OF SCIENTIFIC, ATOMIC AND SPACE RESEARCH. PRIDE OF PLACE WAS TAKEN BY THE FRENCH "DIAMANT" ROCKET, A 19-TON THREE-STAGE MISSILE WHICH NEXT YEAR WILL BE USED TO LAUNCH THE NATION'S FIRST OWN SATELLITE.

    ALSO ON SHOW ARE MODELS OF THE SATELLITES, FRANCE 2 AND FRANCE 3, WHICH THE FRENCH HOPE TO PUT IN ORBIT A YEAR BEFORE THE JOINT EUROPEAN SPACE PROJECT. CUTAWAY MODELS SHOW THE VARIOUS SATELLITE COMPONENTS AND THE ELABORATE EQUIPMENT TO BE CARRIED.

    UNDER THE PRESENT PLANS, ALL INDIVIDUAL PARTS SHOULD PASS THEIR SEPARATE TESTS THIS WINTER. THEN WILL COME EXHAUSTIVE STATIC FIRING TRAILS. WITH ITS LAUNCHING BASE AT COLOMB-BECHAR DUE TO BE HANDED BACK TO THE ALGERIAN GOVERNMENT IN 1967, FRANCE IS NOW ACCELERATING ITS SPACE PROGRAMME: MEANWHILE SEARCHING FOR OTHER SUITABLE SITES.
