    The first Greek goal was disallowed by the Yugoslavian referee, by the close of the first half, Greece were two goals ahead.

    They clinched the victory with a further two goals in the second half, delighting the 20,000 fans watching the game.

    Greece now has to beat West Germany to qualify for the European Nations Cup.

    SYNOPSIS: Greece, playing in the white jerseys, opened their game against Malta in Salonika on Wednesday by attacking strongly. They had to win the game to stay in the running for the European Nations Cup.

    Malta were confused by the strength of the Greek attack and gave away a penalty. It was taken by Iossifides, one of the quickest players in the Greek side. The first Greek goal was disallowed by the referee but Iossifides made up for it by setting up another for Mavros to score. Greek players were jubilant as their team moved into the lead.

    The Greek player Suerelo, attacked along the wing, crossing the ball into the Maltese goal. Mavros was fouled by a Maltese goal. Mavros was fouled by a Maltese player, and the referee awarded a penalty. Antoniades took it and scored. The twenty thousand fans watching the game saw the first half finish with Greece two goals ahead.

    Early in the second half, Greece increased their lead. A strong attack on the Maltese goal was successful when Iossifides scored his second goal.

    Malta's only real chance came in the middle of the second half. They counter-attacked, but could not sustain the effort and missed their opportunity. Greece regained the initiative, and when Malta gave away another penalty the game was over.

    Papaloannou headed the ball into the net, and Greece won four nil. Greece now has to beat West Germany to qualify for the European Nations Cup.
